![]() OK, the jokes won't be appearing in a Jerry Seinfeld monologue any time soon, but remember they were directed at eight-year-olds. Sensing his advantage, Pac-Man yells "Charge!" while the scared ghost exclaims "Feet don't fail me now!" On sticker card #8, Blinky says "Let's get together" to Pac-Man, who replies "Never!" Then there's sticker card #2, where Pac-Man chases a ghost who has been rendered edible by a Power Pellet. ![]() They'd usually be saying something funny, or at least, something that tried to be funny. Most of the peel-off stickers featured Pac-Man and the ghosts talking via cartoon speech bubbles, against a solid black or white background. But if you uncovered an enemy ghost, it was game over! The back of the cards featured instructions and a scoring system.Įven if you failed to earn a high score, you still had the stickers to cheer you up. The object of the game was to take Pac-Man through the maze by scratching off circles one at a time, hopefully revealing dots or other edible items to earn points. These cards were laid out like a maze from the Pac-Man arcade machine, with most of the screen elements hidden behind gold metallic circles that could be scratched off. For a game-crazy kid like myself, the Rub-Offs were the big draw. That extra five cents bought you three sticker cards, a stick of chalky pink bubble gum, and three Rub-Off Game Cards. Each wax pack had a retail price of 30 cents, a nickel more than you'd need to play the arcade game. No matter the exact release date, by sometime in 1981 the cartoonish stickers were being sold in any location where a Pac-obsessed kid might be found. It seems unlikely that Fleer could have rushed the set onto store shelves in only two months. The video game didn't release in North America until late October of 1980 and was not considered a surefire hit right away. It bears a 1980 copyright, but the set likely did not hit stores until 1981. Fleer soon jumped onto the Pac-bandwagon and released a 54-sticker set.
